PRINCESS ROSE

Once upon a time, lived a king and queen reigned in a country, where there were in those days fairies. The king and queen were very wealthy, but though they had been married many years they had no children, it make king and queen sad.
One day, the queen was walking to side of the river, at the bottom of the garden. In the river, she saw a little fish, it had thrown itself out of the water and nearly dead in the bank. The queen took pity and threw it back into the river. Before the little fish swam away, it lifted its head out of the water and said, “I know what your wish, to return for your kindness to me, you will soon have a daughter.”
One day, what the little fish had foretold soon came and the queen had a little daughter, her name was Rose. The king was very happy. He would hold a great party and showed the child to all people. The queen would the fairies come too, because the fairies might can be kind to her little daughter. In the kingdom there were thirteen fairies, but as the king and queen had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat, they were forced to leave one of the fairies.
The great party was began, and twelve fairies came. After the party was over they gathered round in a ring and gave all their best gifts to the little princess. The first they give goodness, another beauty, riches, and so on until she had all that was good in the world. Suddenly, as eleven of them had done blessing her, a great noise was heard in the yard, the thirteen fairies was come, she came into the dining room. She was very angry because she had not been asked to the party, and set to take her revenge. Then she cried out, “In her fifteenth year, you daughter be wounded by a spindle and dead.” Then the twelfth of the friendly fairies, who had not given her gift, went forward, and said that the evil wish must be happen, but she could soft. So her blessing was the king’s daughter when she wounded, she would not really die, but only fall sleep for a hundred years.
However, the king hoped still to save his dear child altogether from the threatened evil, so he ordered that all the spindles in the kingdom should be threw away and burnt. But all the gifts of the first eleven fairies were fulfilled. The princess was so beautiful, good, wise, and everyone who knew was loved her.
Fifteen year later, when Rose was fifteen years old, the king and queen were not at home, she was left alone in the palace. She roved and looked at all the rooms at the palace, until at last she came to an old tower. In the door of the tower there was a golden key. When she turned it, the door sprang open, and there was sat an old lady spinning away. “What are you doing there?” said Rose. “Spinning” said the old lady. The princess took the spindle and began to try and spin. But scarcely had she touched it, before the fairy’s prophecy was fulfilled. The spindle wounded her, and she fell down lifeless on the floor. However, she was not dead but she only fall sleep.
When the king and the queen went home, all their court fell asleep too.
A large hedge of thorns grew round the palace, and every year it became higher and thicker until the old palace was surrounded and hidden. But there went a report through all the land of the beautiful sleeping Rose. From time to time, some king’s son came and tried to break through the thicket into the palace. But, none of them could do because the thorns and bushes laid hold of them and they stuck fast and died.
After many years, came a king’s son into that land. An old man told him the story of the thicket of thorns, how a beautiful palace stood behind it and how a wonderful princess in fall asleep, with all her court. He heard from his grandfather, many princes had come, and had tried to break through the thicket, but they had all stuck fast in it, and died. Then the young prince said, “All this shall not frighten me. I will go and s Princess Rose.” The old man tried to hinder him, but he was bent upon going.
Now that day the hundred years were ended. The prince came to the thicket he saw nothing but beautiful flowering, through which he went with ease, and they shut in after him as thick as ever. At last he came in the palace. Then he went on still farther, and all was so still that he could hear every breath he drew until he came in the old tower and opened the door of the little room. He saw Rose, in there she lay, sleep on a sofa under the window. She looked so beautiful. He could not take his eyes off her. He stooped down and gave her a kiss. When he kissed her, she opened her eyes and awoke, and smiled upon him. Then they went out together. Soon the king and queen also awoke, and all the court, and gazed on each other with great wonder.
And then the prince and Princess Rose were married, and the wedding feast was given. They lived happily together.
